# Data Scope, Sources and Freshness

This site is a read-only catalog of sunglasses specifications for the US market. Sizes are in millimeters. Every published value links to the source that states it.

## What is covered

The current data covers selected models from Ray-Ban, Oakley and Maui Jim. Most are paired with their low-bridge or alternative-fit versions, for example Oakley Sylas OO9448 and Sylas (Low Bridge Fit) OO9448F ([Oakley](https://www.oakley.com/en-us/product/W0OO9448F?variant=888392490964)). The catalog isn't a full listing of any brand. A frame that isn't listed might still exist.

## Field status

Every field has a status:

| Status | Meaning |

| `manufacturer_reported` | Stated by the brand on its own page for this variant; not measured here |
| `merchant_reported` | Stated by a retailer page; not measured here |
| `measured` | Measured by this site with a documented method (no record uses this yet) |
| `conflicting` | Sources disagree; the value is null and both claims are shown |
| `unknown` | No published source states it for this exact variant; null |
| `withheld` | In review and not yet cleared; the raw value is not disclosed |
| `synthetic` | Demo fixture value; never used in production data |

## Source types

Most sources are maker product pages, such as Oakley's US site and its Standard Issue site, which gives the measurements ([Oakley Standard Issue](https://www.oakleysi.com/en-us/product/W0OO9448?variant=888392454928)). Maker guides supply fit-label definitions ([Maui Jim](https://www.mauijim.com/US/en_US/asian-fit-sunglasses)). Retailer pages are used rarely. When a retailer value cannot be tied to the exact maker variant, it is kept in review and withheld: for example, a retailer temple length for one Ray-Ban RB2140F variant is not published because the colour-code match to the maker page could not be confirmed.

## retrieved_at vs checked_at

- `retrieved_at` is on a source: when that page was fetched.
- `checked_at` is on a variant: when its values were last successfully verified.

Freshness is judged per record from `checked_at`.

## Freshness

Specs are re-checked by hand against maker pages. The target is monthly, and there is no automated crawler. A record older than 30 days is marked `stale`, and a size or lens condition it would pass is reported as `stale` instead of `pass`, so it cannot count as a match until it is re-checked; and a record with no check time is `unknown`. When a response contains several records, its `as_of` is the oldest check time among them. Each record's `checked_at` is the authoritative time. Freshness is a policy for how old data may be. A fresh record is not guaranteed to be correct.

No merchant or affiliate price feed is connected. The catalog has no prices or availability, and offer tools return `NO_OFFER_COVERAGE`.

## Corrections

If a value is wrong or out of date, report the variant, the field and a source URL that states the correct value. The methodology page explains how sources are reviewed.
